Osorno Volcano Ascent

About this tour

The Osorno volcano is a 2,652-meter stratovolcano and one of the great natural symbols of the Los Lagos region. Its imposing silhouette rises between Lake Todos los Santos to the east and Lake Llanquihue to the west, dominating one of the most recognizable landscapes in southern Chile. Although its last known eruption was in 1869, its summit remains covered by a glacier crossed by numerous crevasses. Progression over this terrain requires experience, good fitness and the use of rope, crampons, ice axe and other safety systems. Weather conditions can change quickly and reduce visibility, so every ascent is made with a careful evaluation of mountain conditions. Reaching the summit of Osorno is an extraordinary experience: when the weather allows, its highest point offers an impressive 360° panorama including the Tronador, Puntiagudo and Calbuco volcanoes, lakes Llanquihue and Todos los Santos, and the vast Andean landscapes of the region.

Itinerary

Day 1 · The ascent

4:00 AM departure from Puerto Varas / Puerto Octay (several lodging options). We drive to the Osorno ski center at 1,200 m, where we begin hiking toward the glacier and gear up to progress safely. On the glacier the slope grows steadily steeper, requiring ropes and the assistance of a professional mountain guide. Depending on conditions, the final section can present technical difficulties that we overcome safely with the guide before reaching the beautiful summit. Maximum summit time is 1:00 PM. Descent by the same route back to the vehicle and return to Puerto Varas or Puerto Octay, normally arriving around 6:00 PM.
