Lonquimay Volcano Ascent
Malalcahuello National Reserve · 2,865 mA classic of La Araucanía and the perfect transition from trekking to mountaineering, with a glacier sheltered inside its crater.
View details →The guided ascent of the Llaima volcano is one of the great mountaineering experiences of La Araucanía. At 3,125 meters, this imposing stratovolcano rises in the heart of Conguillío National Park, surrounded by araucaria forests, ancient lava fields, lagoons and some of the most iconic landscapes of southern Chile. The activity involves a long day progressing over volcanic slopes and snow or ice sections, depending on the season and mountain conditions. The route gains more than 1,600 meters of elevation, so it demands very good fitness and endurance. Throughout the route, a professional guide leads the route choice, the pace and the use of crampons, ice axe, helmet and other technical gear when conditions require it. From the upper sections — and the summit when conditions allow — you get an extraordinary panorama of Lake Conguillío, the park's forests and lagoons, and the Sierra Nevada, Lonquimay, Tolhuaca, Villarrica and Lanín volcanoes. More than reaching a summit, this is a demanding, safe experience deeply connected to the Andean landscape.
We depart Temuco toward the Nevados de Vilcún on the volcano's west face, where we leave the vehicles and begin ascending toward the saddle between the main cone of Llaima and Pichi Llaima, passing very close to the west glacier of this massif, before climbing to the main summit. The top is simply stunning: Lake Conguillío, the surrounding volcanoes (Sierra Nevada, Villarrica and Lanín, among others) and the whole region. Afterwards we descend and return to Temuco.
