Llaima Volcano Ascent
Conguillío National Park · 3,125 mOne of the great mountaineering experiences of La Araucanía, with over 1,600 m of elevation gain through araucaria forests and volcanic slopes.
View details →In the heart of the Andean Araucanía rises the Lonquimay volcano, an imposing 2,865-meter stratovolcano in the surroundings of the Malalcahuello National Reserve. Its silhouette dominates a landscape of araucaria forests, vast volcanic slopes and mountains in one of the most spectacular Andean sectors of southern Chile. During the ascent we progress over volcanic terrain and, depending on the season, snow sections where crampons and ice axe may be needed. The activity requires good fitness and is an excellent transition from trekking to mountaineering. From the summit there is an extraordinary panorama of the neighboring Tolhuaca volcano and great cordillera peaks such as Llaima, Sierra Nevada, Villarrica and Lanín. Accompanied by a professional guide, participants discover this emblematic landscape through a demanding, safe experience deeply connected with nature.
We leave Temuco early toward the Malalcahuello valley, heading up to the Corralco ski center, the starting point of the ascent. We continue with a beautiful climb along the volcano's southeast ridge to its crater, which shelters a glacier inside. From the summit we take in the close-by Tolhuaca volcano and an incredible view of the Cordillera de las Raíces and the Malalcahuello–Nalcas National Reserve.
